5th MAKMA International Poster Award ‘Sustainable/Unsustainable’ “The Earth has enough to satisfy everyone’s hunger, but not their greed.” This sentence by Mahatma Gandhi perfectly reflects what is at stake when we talk about environmental issues, which is the same as saying about our always controversial relationship with the nature that surrounds us.

Ever since humans became sedentary and divided up a piece of land to settle in a territory to live in, they were already attacking the earth that, in essence, remained unscathed. So the much vaunted human action as the cause of the natural disasters we currently suffer is nothing more than an oxymoron, since nature is always subject to the tense calm of those who admire it, while at the same time invading it.

Therefore, to repeat Gandhi’s statement, it is a question of ensuring that the dialectic between human beings and the Earth gives rise to a balanced synthesis. That nature, always exposed to human action in its search for spaces to live in and from which to extract food to satisfy its hunger, is not the object of excessive ambition.

Hence, the motto ‘ Sustainable/Unsustainable ‘, the 5th MAKMA International Poster Award, is addressed to all those who feel concerned by this dialectic, in order to shed light and, why not, shadows on such a difficult balance. A balance, like the mental one from which such a problematic ambition derives, which can undoubtedly be used when creating posters that reflect such great tension.
